Why we should be talking about Prebiotics?

Why we should be talking about Prebiotics?

Prebiotic Power

Prebiotics play a key role in keeping our bodies healthy and while we at Eatology and Cocofib know of the fantastic benefits there are from taking coconut prebiotic fiber daily, we were curious to find out what other people knew of this under the radar superfood.

We recently carried out a poll, and out of a 100 people only 10 people had heard or felt they knew of prebiotics.  Out of the 10 people only two people were able to share the function or benefits of prebiotics. There are many ways prebiotics benefit health.

Regular intake of prebiotics can lead to:

  • Better gut health and improved digestion
  • Enhanced immune function and cancer protection
  • Lower inflammation
  • Reduced risk for heart disease
  • Help with weight loss or maintenance
  • Protection of bone health
  • Hormone regulation and improved moods

40% of people polled thought that prebiotics and probiotics were the same thing. Which is in correct, Probiotics are living strains of good bacteria. Prebiotics feed your good bacteria, helping the growth of your own resident probiotic that live in the gut and if your supplement probiotic is alive when it reaches the gut, it can also help populate your supplemented probiotic. This was not a surprise as there are more probiotic brands and products sold and marketed in supplement form as well as probiotics found in food and beverages.

To understand other reasons why prebiotics are important, and why taking a probiotic does not always work. Let's explore the common issues commercial probiotic products may have:

Quantity - whether the number of probiotic is sufficient to deliver health benefits given that the total number of gut bacteria is 100 trillion

Variety of strain - number of probiotic species in the gut is far more than the varieties commercially available

Viability - the ingested probiotic may be killed along the GI tract before arrival of colon

Colonization - whether the ingested probiotic can be colonized inside the colon

We love our Eatology daily coconut prebiotic by cocofib product and so we want to share our knowledge with as many people as possible to understand the importance of prebiotics.
